Our Story

THE HISTORY of the LONDON BRIDGE BEARD and MUSTACHE COMPETITION

In the early70s Lake Havasu City, AZ was a small community made up of less than 4,000 residents. With very few businesses up and running, the local economy was in its infancy and local residents were always looking for fun free entertainment. When the London Bridge arrived and was reassembled on Lake Havasu it spurred local businesses to plan for the dedication of the bridge. During the entire month of October 1971, many events and competitions were created and hosted by local businesses all over town and under the bridge. These events provided free entertainment for families and tourists to enjoy all month long.

Among the many new competitions in 1971, local businessmen Jim Rosensweet and Lee Shoblom created The London Bridge Beard and Mustache Competition. This fun competitive event became a local favorite and an annual signature competition during London Bridge Days every October. Over time, many of the community events became dormant and disappeared from the calendar.

The London Bridge Beard and Mustache Competition is going strong as the oldest continued 54-year-old competition in the History of Lake Havasu City and we have revitalized and upgraded the event to meet all requirements of national competitions.

Today’s competition includes 11 categories and even a women’s Whiskerina division for creative “homemade” beards or mustaches. You will find this year’s competition listed along with the many national competitions on The Beard Calendar.com.  https://thebeardcalendar.com/

We hope you will continue to support this favorite local event by registering to compete. If you choose not to compete you are welcome to enjoy the competition as a spectator and cheer for your favorite beard or mustache free of charge!
